Human skin, SEMSkin surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the pattern seen on the skin of the lower arm and hand. This skin is taken from a 40-year-old man. The outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is made up of dead cells that are constantly shed and replaced by new cells from the epidermis below. Magnification: x30 when printed 10cm wide.
