African elephants (Loxodonta africana) drinking at dusk. This is the world's largest land animal. It weighs up to 10,000 kilograms and measures 3.5 meters in height. It is a sociable animal, living in family units of adult females and juveniles. The adult male leads a solitary existence, until the mating season when it will approach females. Although found in many habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the African elephant is considered to be a vulnerable species. Photographed on the Zambezi river, Zimbabwe.
