African elephants

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) drinking at dusk. This is the world's largest land animal. It weighs up to 10, 000 kilograms and measures 3.5 meters in height. It is a sociable animal, living in family units of adult females and juveniles. The adult male leads a solitary existence, until the mating season when it will approach females. Although found in many habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the African elephant is considered to be a vulnerable species. Photographed on the Zambezi river, Zimbabwe.
