Red deer (Cervus elaphus) stags fighting. During the mating season, mature stags compete for the attentions of the females. The rivals begin the The rivals begin the rut by walking in parallel with each other. This allows them to assess the opponents antlers, body size and strength before the antlers are locked in combat.
