Monocyte. Coloured Scanning ElectronMicrograph (SEM) of a monocyte (macrophage) ina blood capillary of the adrenal gland. The monocyte (pink) is the largest type of whiteblood cell. It has little function in blood, butmigrates into tissues. Here, it is seen passingthrough a porous capillary (blue) which has debrisof blood platelets (yellow). Protruberances on thesurface of the monocyte cell help it to move.In tissues it scavenges and engulfs cellulardebris & foreign micro-organisms.
