Sulphur-eating bacteria ThiocystisColoured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) ofthe sulphur-eating bacteria, Thiocystis sp. Bacteria that use chemicals such as sulphur toconvert to energy are known as chemolitho- trophs. Thiocystis lives in ananaerobic (oxygen free) environment. It isspherical or oval-shaped, with a polar flagellumthat is used for movement. Some bacteria seenhere, with two cells, are in the process of celldivision. Thiocystis stores sulphur ingranules within its cell. It belongs to the groupof "purple sulphur bacteria" that are found inanaerobic zones of lakes and sulphur springs, developing a purple colour.
