Hydroponic cultivation of sage plantsHydroponic sage cultivation. Sage plants beinggrown hydroponically (in water) in a laboratory. The plants obtain nutrients from the water, instead of from soil, increasing efficiency andreducing expense. Following a medical trial in2003, oils from sage leaves are being investigatedas a means of slowing the onset of Alzheimer'sdisease. Sage species being investigated include Salvia lavandulaefolia and Salvia officinalis.Part of the research looks at plant nutrientlevels to try and increase the yield and qualityof the sage's essential oils. This research isbeing carried out at laboratories at theUniversities of Newcastle and Northumbria, UK, aspart of work by the Medicinal Plant ResearchCentre.
